Wilderness City Series
This body of work, which is ongoing, centers around the abundant wilderness that the Yukon has to offer. I find myself currently drawn to the areas of forest within the city limits, the borderlands where one thing ends and another begins. These areas often harbour a powerful sense of tension, and challenge our perceptions of what is, and what isn't, wilderness.
Trainline Series
In these paintings I wanted to highlight the feeling of detachment we experience while travelling. I would take the train each day and watch the countryside slowly morph into the city, wondering at what point this change takes place. The majority of the train passengers were immersed in their phones or laptops, paying little attention to the nature passing them by, or the people all around them. It seemed to me to say a lot about the modern age.
Edges Series
Whilst living in Ilkley, West Yorkshire in the UK, I began this series of work that are among my most personal canvases. Knowing I would be moving to a new life in Canada, I became hungry to experience my roots in that area, visiting places of importance that I'd never taken the time to see: the farm where my parents met, the church they married in, places my grandmother took me for walks, and the church an ancestor built. All these places shared the common theme of being areas on the fringe of town, where the town meets the farm fields, or where the rural land meets the wild of the moor.
